Marvin: ‘When my son, Hakeem, was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) a year and a half ago, we immediately contacted the Princess Máxima Center. From that first moment, we felt that we were in the right place. It's a place where knowledge, care, and attention come together. When Hakeem was hospitalized for several weeks, we visited the center’s facilities often. Like me, Hakeem loves soccer, so we often went to the sports garden, no matter how tired he was. It's one of our favorite places at the center.
Being seen
It has been an intense and emotional period, but I have also experienced a lot of support. The doctors and nurses take their time, clearly explain everything, and pay attention to the parents as well. I didn't just feel like the parent of a patient; I also felt seen as a person in a difficult situation. I had and still have complete confidence in the Máxima Center’s team.
I was going through a difficult time in my personal life with a divorce and job loss when Hakeem fell ill. The support of my mother and other family members helped us get through this period. Hakeem is now in the maintenance treatment phase, and we have our lives back on track at home.
Research
Regarding the treatment of leukemia, Hakeem and I are committed to participating in scientific research. We are committed to doing everything we can to advance research and treatment methods. I don't want this to happen to other children.
Environment
All of the play and recreation areas at the Máxima Center, especially the sports and exercise gardens, have been important to Hakeem and me. As a parent, having the opportunity to stay close to your child in rooms next to each other is wonderful. The medical pedagogical staff are also invaluable! They have guided my son so well, and I have learned a lot from them as well. How do you deal with a seriously ill child in pain who doesn't want to move?
The practical facilities for parents are nice. There are quiet places where parents can relax for a moment. You can eat well every day at the restaurant. That makes a big difference on such difficult days.

How would I describe the Princess Máxima Center in three words? I would say: Expert, humane, and hopeful. That's how I experienced it. I hope my tips will be useful to other parents. Take things step by step, and don't hesitate to ask for help. Remember, it's not just your child who is going through a difficult time; you are too. Take good care of yourself so you can be there for your child.’
