Testimonial Marianne, mother of Bas

'On April 30, 2019, we came to the Princess Máxima Center for the first time. We came from the AMC where it turned out that our son Bas, then 8 years old, had been diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphatic leukemia).'
In the beginning everything is new and we had to ask a lot of questions. The Máxima Center was quite new and not all the nurses were equally experienced. But we could always go to our nurse specialist with questions. As we became more familiar with the hospital, it felt familiar. Very strange how something heavy can get used to....

Eager to go to Muziekids
The Princess Máxima Center is neatly furnished and cared for, the staff are all equally friendly. There are many distractions for the children, such as the music studio, playing outside in the playground, visits from the Cliniclowns and the guidance of the educational staff. For Bas, the Muziekids studio was very important. He loved being there for a while and making music. Preferably with his favorite accompanist Niels. For us as parents and siblings it was also a pleasant distraction to be here.

We were also very happy with the parent child room: its own space and its own bed, shower and toilet for us as parents. That is very nice.

Tips for other parents
If I may summarize the Máxima Center in a few words, the words 'familiar', 'warm', 'knowledgeable' and 'professional' come to mind. My tips to other parents: Never hesitate to ask, because a lot comes your way. Regularly stop by the desk of the Children's Cancer Society of the Netherlands (VKKN) in the central hall. It can also be nice to have contact with other parents, such as through social media. For me personally as a mom, connecting with other moms via Instagram has added value. It is good to realize that you are in the same boat together, and words of confidence gave strength and support. And always listen to your own feelings. If you need support for yourself, ring the bell in time.' View all stories
