King Willem-Alexander announced this today to President Zelensky of Ukraine, who is visiting the Netherlands for the NATO summit taking place in The Hague. The Máxima Center and the Ukrainian hospital have a close collaboration. The Dutch government has pledged financial support to help realize the plans.
Rob Pieters, Chief Máxima International, says: ‘It’s encouraging to see how the collaboration between our center and the children’s hospital in Lviv is leading to better care for children with cancer in Ukraine. And it’s truly heartening that, even in these challenging circumstances, King Willem-Alexander and President Zelensky are supporting this partnership.’
International collaborations like this are closely aligned with the mission of the Máxima Center: to cure every child with cancer, with the best possible quality of life. The collaboration with Lviv focuses on training and knowledge exchange. From the Máxima, we will support the hospital in Lviv with setting up care delivery, organizing logistics and workflows in the new building, and eventually managing the move to the new facility. This includes the development of clinical protocols, clear role definitions, and standardized care processes. A similar advisory process was previously carried out at the Marie Curie Hospital for Children in Romania. This next step will further strengthen our joint efforts in patient care, research, and education between pediatric oncology professionals in Ukraine and the Netherlands.
‘Our colleagues in Lviv and here at the Máxima are grateful and excited. This long-needed expansion of the hospital for children with brain tumors and other serious illnesses can now begin,’ says Rob Pieters.
