Travel and accomodation costs
Information and tips
From the start of your child’s treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy), your health insurer reimburses all trips (including check-ups and tests) to and from the Princess Máxima Center and the shared care center through the basic health insurance package, for both private transport and taxi. You pay a yearly personal contribution (“eigen bijdrage”). You can download the “authorization for seated patient transport” form from your insurer’s website or request it by phone.
It’s important to apply for authorization within three months of diagnosis. Otherwise, you lose the right to claim reimbursement for costs already incurred.
Once authorization has been granted, most insurers allow plenty of time to submit your claims. If you’re unsure, we recommend contacting your health insurer directly.
For reimbursement purposes, the doctor’s assistant can provide you with an overview of all appointments.
Please note: this only applies to trips when your child is in the car with you, not when you drive home while your child is admitted (see visiting costs below).
The parking garage at the Princess Máxima Center is intended for parents (one parking space per family) and patients. Reduced parking rates are available for parents. You can find more information about this on our website.
If your child has to travel frequently to the hospital for tests or check-ups, you may, under certain conditions, also be eligible for reimbursement of these travel expenses (private transport or taxi). Check your policy conditions or contact your health insurer to find out whether you qualify for the “hardship clause” (hardheidsclausule).
When your child is in the hospital, travel costs can quickly add up if you alternate visits. Some insurers reimburse these "visitor costs" through supplementary insurance. Check your policy or call your insurer.
If your child needs proton therapy at UMC Groningen, you or social work can request an "authorization for lodging expenses" from your health insurer. The insurer reimburses your stay at the "Family House" during treatment for up to four nights per week. For more information about this reimbursement or assistance with the authorization request, contact social work at the Máxima Center.
If you choose to travel daily, you are entitled to the mileage reimbursement (see travel costs during treatment).g).At the Máxima Center, you can stay with your child day and night in the parent–child room. Families can also stay at the Ronald McDonald House Utrecht, for example if your child has an early appointment or if you wish to stay close to the Máxima Center.
The Ronald McDonald House Utrecht is located next to the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital.
The doctor’s assistant or medical social worker can check on the day itself if there is availability. Advance booking is not possible for this location.
You can, however, make a reservation in advance for the Ronald McDonald House De Bilt.
More information about the Ronald McDonald Houses can be found here.If your child has at least three consecutive outpatient or day care treatments, you can convert the travel allowance for those days into an accommodation reimbursement under the basic health insurance package.
In that case, the travel reimbursement for those days no longer applies.
Always request prior approval from your health insurer.
Sometimes, you may still be eligible for reimbursement through your supplementary insurance, even if your child has fewer than three consecutive outpatient or day care treatments.
Check your policy conditions or contact your insurer for details.
