After treatment

When your child finishes treatment, they receive the flower bead. A special and festive moment. Alongside the relief, you may also feel uncertain. Returning to “normal life” can be more difficult than expected.

Your child will now come to the Máxima Center regularly for checkups to make sure everything is going well. Your child will have a physical exam and blood tests. Depending on the diagnosis and treatment, other tests may also take place. At first, the appointments are every few months. Later, there is more time between visits.

For your whole family, it can take time to find a new routine. Your child may still have low energy or difficulty concentrating. Your other children may ask for the attention they missed. And there are your own feelings. The worry about your child remains. You may only now begin to realize what you have been through over the past period.

In the brochure “The flower bead: all's well that ends well?!” from the Dutch Childhood Cancer Association, you will find stories and experiences that may feel familiar. You can ask for a copy at the association’s desk or from your healthcare provider.
