CT scan (CAT scan)
CT scans (computer tomography scans) provide a detailed image of organs and body parts using X-rays.
Helping and preparing your child
During treatment, your child will have many tests and procedures. A child life specialist helps your child, and you, prepare for these.
Your child lies on a table that slowly slides through the round opening of the scanning device. Each time the table moves up a bit, a series of photos is taken. Your child must lie still for a while. A vacuum mattress can help keep your child comfortable. A regular CT scan takes about 10 minutes, a CT scan with contrast dye takes 20-30 minutes and a CT scan with a puncture takes about an hour.
