PICC line
Your child has or will soon be fitted with a PICC line (a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter). Via this line, we can administer fluids, blood, food, contrast fluid and medicines, as well as draw blood. The advantage of this line is that it eliminates the need for your child to repeatedly have an intravenous catheter (IV) inserted. A PICC line can remain in place for some time.
What exactly is a PICC line?
A PICC is a flexible line that leads through a smaller blood vessel into a large blood vessel leading to the heart. A small portion of the line protrudes outside the skin. The line has a cap onto which an IV line or a syringe can be fastened. The doctor inserts the line in the treatment room of the Princess Máxima Center.
