About the LATER-clinic

• When will you come to the LATER-clinic?

  Starting five years after your diagnosis, you'll go to the LATER clinic for checkups. Until you turn 18, you'll see a pediatric oncologist (or your own) or a LATER pediatrician. After that, you'll see a LATER doctor for adults, a nurse practitioner. Around your 18th birthday, a smooth transition to the LATER clinic for adults is ensured. This means you'll complete your checkups with the pediatric oncologist. This can take some getting used to.

  During your first appointment, you'll receive an explanation about the LATER clinic and your personal LATER care plan. How often you come for checkups and which tests you'll receive depend on the type of cancer and the treatment you received. These determine the risk of late effects. These checkups can remain annual, but also every two and a half or five years.

• How do you get an invitation?

  You will receive an invitation for each LATER appointment with the date, time, location, and the scheduled tests. We try to conduct all tests and the appointment on the same day.

  If you were treated at the Máxima Center, we have your information. If you came from a different LATER outpatient clinic, your information has been transferred to the Máxima Center. The LATER outpatient clinic at the Princess Máxima Center is a merger of the LATER outpatient clinics of:

  • AMC (Amsterdam)

  • ErasmusMC (Rotterdam)

  • UMCG (Groningen)

  • UMCU (Utrecht)

  • VUmc (Amsterdam)

  There are also LATER outpatient clinics at LUMC (Leiden) and Radboud University Medical Center (Nijmegen). If you are under their care, you can contact them with your questions. If you have been waiting for an invitation for a long time or are curious about when it will be your turn, please contact us. We can then schedule an appointment for you if you wish.

• Where can you find the LATER clinic?

  If you're coming by public transport, get off at the Princess Máxima Centre (stop WKZ/Prinses Máxima Centrum). If you're coming by car, you can park in the Máxima parking garage. Your license plate will be scanned, so you won't receive a ticket. After your visit, enter your license plate number at the parking meter to pay. You can proceed directly to the LATER outpatient clinic. You'll find it on the ground floor, to the left of the espresso bar.

• Who pays for the visit to the LATER clinic?

  A visit to the LATER-clinic is covered by your health insurance. If you are 18 or older, you must pay the mandatory deductible. If you're considering increasing your deductible, please take your LATER checkups into account.
