Insurances
If you've had cancer, getting insurance can sometimes be more difficult and expensive. Here's what to look out for and how to best approach it.
Insurance
If you've had cancer, taking out insurance can sometimes be more difficult and expensive. Below, you'll find what to look out for and the best approach.
When applying for a new insurance policy or changing an existing one, you must always complete an application form. Complete it honestly and completely. If it later turns out you've withheld information, the insurer may decide not to pay out.
Sometimes the insurer will request additional medical information. The medical advisor can then ask for your permission to request information from your GP or specialist. Most insurers accept people who have had childhood cancer, but sometimes additional conditions or a higher premium apply.
Tip: Never cancel your current insurance before you have been definitively accepted for the new one.
Health Insurance
Just like every other Dutch citizen, you are entitled to basic health insurance; this coverage is the same across all insurers. You can also opt for supplementary insurance. There are many different packages and premiums, so read the terms and conditions carefully or ask someone in your circle or an intermediary for advice. Supplemental insurance is not mandatory, and insurers are not obligated to accept everyone. Many health insurers use similar acceptance criteria.
Life and Term Insurance
Taking out term insurance can be more difficult, even if you've been cured for a long time. Such insurance is often necessary when taking out a mortgage or other large loan. Always disclose that you had cancer; if you don't disclose this, the insurer may refuse to pay out after your death, potentially leaving your loved ones in financial difficulty.
The "Right to be forgotten" policy has been in effect since January 1, 2021. If you were under 21 at the time of your diagnosis and have been cancer-free for five years, you no longer need to disclose that you had cancer when applying for term life or funeral insurance (below the applicable threshold). For more information, please consult the relevant policy.

Tip: Always read the policy conditions carefully and take out insurance as early as possible; premiums are usually lower at a younger age.
