Testimonial Carola, mother of Cato

'On November 14, 2017, we first came in contact with the Princess Máxima Center. Cato was diagnosed with lymphoblastic B lymphoma (NHL) and was 12 years old at the time. Treatment took two years. Now she has check-ups every six months.'
It was a tough and uncertain time in which we were very much lived. It may sound cliché, but it really felt like a rollercoaster. You eliminate yourself. We were super well taken care of and guided by the team of the Princess Máxima Center. And no matter how difficult it was, we look back on this period with a good feeling. Our family has come out stronger and we now enjoy the ordinary, simple things in life more. These have become special moments. We hope we can hold on to this forever.

New center
We no longer had admissions in the current building of the Princess Máxima Center, we were at the WKZ at the time. We were there when they moved in and the opening of the new center in June 2018, and Cato was one of the first children in the day treatment. All the facilities and amenities in the Máxima Center are wonderful, they were well thought out. We also saw the new building becoming cozier and more atmospheric. As parents, and sometimes with family or friends, we especially walked a lot in the beautiful surroundings of the Máxima Center. It was nice to be able to go outside, talk together and clear your head. All the clear information from the VKKN was also great. Cato herself especially benefited from the Stichting Haarwensen, the kanjerketting and crafts with Eliane from Café des Artistes. During the day treatments, Cato could also be found a lot in the Muziekids studio and in the Make-A-Wish room. And of course the Cliniclowns are amazing, and not only Cato thought so ... so did we!

Feels like coming home
When we think back on our time at the Máxima Center, the first thing that comes to mind is the word gratitude. We are grateful that Cato is doing well and that she was treated in a wonderful center with the best people, care and knowledge in one place. You would rather not be there but if you must, this is truly the best place for your child. It is a unique, warm and safe place. Of course it is nice that we visit the Máxima Center much less, but when we are there it still feels a bit like coming home. The best, sweetest and most committed employees work at the Princess Máxima Center. Each with a passion for their work and the children. A top team works here, and you can feel that.

With a smile and a tear
If we could give one suggestion to other parents, it would be: Carpe Diem - Seize the day! Even though it's a terrible and stressful situation you have been put in as a family try to take the positive out of each day. No matter how difficult that may be at times. Let it wash over you. You have no control over what happens to you. Humor and positivity has kept our family going. With a laugh and a tear, we got through it.

Contact with other parents, whether through the VKKN or not, is nice and you can help each other. View all stories
